2022 Hunan (Changsha) Battery Industry Expo Opens

The advanced energy-storage materials industry is a strategic and foundational sector for the development of new-energy vehicles and the energy internet. On November 24, 2022, the 2022 Hunan (Changsha) Battery Industry Expo and the Second China International Conference on New-Generation Energy-Storage Technologies and Engineering Applications opened in Changsha. During the opening ceremony, industry experts and corporate representatives jointly discussed the entire industrial chain of advanced energy-storage materials and their applications, adopting an industry-wide perspective and focusing on application-driven demand to empower the high-quality development of Hunan’s energy-storage materials sector and its new-energy vehicle industry. Concurrently, more than 20 companies, including Desai Battery Technology Co., Ltd. and Hunan Wuchuang Circular Technology Co., Ltd., signed agreements for eight major projects with a total investment of RMB 33.95 billion.

This year’s expo is co-hosted by the Hunan Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology, the Hunan Provincial Department of Commerce, and the Changsha Municipal People’s Government, under the theme “New Energy, New Opportunities, New Heights.” Adopting a hybrid “exhibition-plus-conference” format, the event features more than ten specialized forums, including sessions on energy-storage system integration, sodium-ion batteries, flow-battery technologies and applications, solid-state batteries, novel physical energy-storage technologies, hydrogen-based energy storage, thermal and cold-storage systems, and energy-storage capital. In addition, it includes themed activities such as the Battery Industry Expo and an exhibition of new-energy vehicles, with numerous leading NEV brands—including BYD and Xpeng—making their debut. Covering 30,000 square meters and comprising five exhibition zones, the event brings together over 1,000 companies, which will showcase, over three days, a portfolio of foundational, strategic, and cutting-edge research achievements. The program will also explore new technologies, concepts, and approaches in the field of advanced energy-storage materials, fostering a high-quality, collaborative “dual-carbon” ecosystem for the advanced energy-storage materials industry and cultivating new drivers of economic growth.

According to available information, Hunan Province’s 14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Strategic Emerging Industries has explicitly designated energy-storage-related industries as key areas for prioritized development, thereby providing crucial support for extending and strengthening the industrial chain of new-type energy-storage clusters. In recent years, Hunan’s new-type energy-storage industry has grown rapidly, with its scale expanding at a fast pace. The province has identified advanced energy-storage materials and power-battery industries as one of its 22 leading industrial chains, and has preliminarily established a relatively complete industrial value chain that spans raw-material production, battery manufacturing, system integration, application promotion, and resource recycling. This has given rise to an “one core, multiple nodes” industrial structure centered on Changsha, with additional hubs in Zhuzhou, Xiangtan, Yongzhou, Changde, Yiyang, and other cities.
